An archipelago comprising seven islands of volcanic origin, the Aeolian Islands – Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli – are located off the northern coast of Sicily.
The largest island, Lipari, has a vibrant residential centre at the foot of the Acropolis, while the hamlets of Canneto,Pianoconte and Acquacalda offer some of the most interesting landscapes.
Stromboli is the most remote island, famous for the continual explosive activity of its volcano with lava flows descending down a large crater known as the sciara di Fuoco.
The little island of Vulcano also features an active volcano, activity often demonstrated with vapour clouds and sulphuric mud: the Fossa crater rises above the residential centre Porto di Levante, offering a magnificent view.
The smallest of the larger islands is Panarea, at 21 km2, whose volcanic origins have made it resilient with sheer drops above a picture-perfect sea. It is surrounded by a group of 5 smaller islands and rocks – Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca.
