Margini is based on the life experience of the two writers, punk musicians from Grosseto, and the awareness that – sooner or later – life in the provinces can prove too narrow for the dreams of youth. Dreamers must escape in good time or risk being absorbed into the very dynamic they do not recognise as theirs.
The main characters (Edoardo, Iacopo, Michele) are friends in a band and ready to do anything it takes to reach their goal: bring their favourite band to Grosseto, their hometown in the Italian countryside. This may seem simple but, to their own cost, they quickly discover that the noise and rage of punk sit badly with the silence of their dusty city.
The historical centre of Grosseto is the stage for the conflict they face, putting their own futures and friendship on the line. In the background of the story are the park and piazza Parri, the Medici walls, piazza Dante, corso Carducci, the Police Station and Town Hall of Grosseto, in addition to the train station and banks of river Ombrone. The little mountain village of Abbadia San Salvatore, on Mount Amiata (province of Siena) also provided a location.
While on location, the production crew used the Sala Eden cinema as a base, thereby turning a spotlight on a historic building in Grosseto that had been disused for many years.
