The Wolf of Wall Street, shot mostly in New York and upstate, follows the rise and fall of broker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) from young newbie on Wall Street to founder of Stratton Oakmont, a company that pretends to be a well-established stockbroking firm. Founder and employees enjoy a life of excess in every way, at work and in private, until they attract the attention of the FBI.
To evade investigation and avoid the discovery of his illicit dealings, Belfort heads to Italy by yacht, continuing to run the company from a distance. Shooting in Italy took place without the director or actors and was amalgamated in postproduction to create a backdrop. The seafront village of Portofino in Liguria is clearly recognisable with its pastel-coloured houses and picturesque harbour that welcomes boats of all sizes while Chiavari and the Cinque Terre are also featured.
