Chiavari (GE) is the commerce hub of the Tigullio area given its position near the river Entella which facilitates communication with the valleys of the hinterland: val d’Aveto, valle Fontanabuona, valle Sturla, val Graveglia and val Petronio.
The town centre, medieval in origin, has 19th century porticos and buildings in Genovese style such as Palazzo Rocca. The heart of the area is via Martiri della Liberazione, also known as the carruggito dritto, lined with trattorias and workshops, where an antique market is held every second weekend of the month along with food and traditional markets, and events themed around local produce and artistic artisanship. The artisans of Chiavari specialise in producing chairs “chiavarine” and lace “macramè”.
Places of interest include the botanical garden with monumental orchid beds, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Garden inspired by Rome’s Pantheon.
Chiavari has also developed its tourist outreach, able to offer a big, recently built harbour, beaches and clean seas.
