Portofino, a famous tourist destination, is a fishing village clustered around a small natural port at the head of an inlet in the Gulf of Tigullio, east of Genoa.
The tall pastel coloured houses and the famous cobbled “Piazzetta” (square) extend along the bay, with streets lined with high-end boutiques and traditional shops running inland. The little harbour has numerous restaurants overlooking the bay and can receive yachts, ferries and boats.
Uphill from the harbour is the Church of St. George, the forecourt featuring a Ligurian mosaic risseu in black and white pebbles. A military fort dating to the 10th century, Castle Brown stands in the heart of the promontory surrounded by parkland and is used today as a location for cultural events. Punta del Capo and the Portofino Lighthouse are strategically placed at the end of the promontory for an extended view across the gulf. The surrounding area, especially the Protected Marine Area, is home to exceptional natural heritage, with soft coral, red coral and various species of fish.
