Written by Stefano Bises with the collaboration of Alessandro Valenti, Bernardo Pellegrini and Michela Straniero, the eight-episode series Unwanted is freely inspired by Bilal, book by undercover investigative journalist Fabrizio Gatti about his journey on the routes of the Sahara, populated not only by those fleeing Africa to reach Europe but also by those who do business by profiting from their desperation.
The series tells of two worlds, distant extremes, which collide when a group of African castaways are rescued by a luxury cruise ship traveling in the Mediterranean. The situation soon escalates, prompting questions about how attitudes and values change when one's own life is at risk.
The story is set on a cruise ship sailing the Mediterranean Sea. The interiors of the ship were recreated on a soundstage in Rome (the exteriors are those of the Valiant Lady). Some exterior scenes were filmed in Civitavecchiaand its port and in Senegal.

Orizzonte is a gigantic cruise ship. It carries 5,000 people between passengers and crew. On the first night of a cruise, twenty-eight African migrants are rescued from the sea. For these people fleeing poverty, hunger and wars, the ship is salvation. For the passengers, the encounter with the castaways is a reality check that they would probably have done without: when the refugees discover that the ship is headed to the place they fled, North Africa, they hijack the ship, transforming the cruise into a theatre of war where all the conflicts triggered by migration will be unleashed.
