The Fortino di San Pietro on the ancient Lazzaretto Dock is one of the most picturesque monuments in the Port of Civitaveccchia (RM). It is a lighthouse tower once part of the great port designed by Apollodorus of Damascus for Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century C.E. Over the centuries both fort and port were modified, particularly by the work that was started in the 17th century under Pope Urban VIII (1623-44) and continued through to the following century when it was completed under Pope Benedict XIV (1740-58).
During an outbreak of the plague in 1656, the fort was transformed into a hospital which is why the entire dock is still known as the Lazzaretto (a lazaret was used for quarantine purposes) today. Despite inevitable damage from the Allied bombings of 14 May 1943, the structure has survived to this day.
