Thanks to the executive production of Viola Film, the series The Swarm was shot in a range of Italian locations, mostly shoreline and sea: their choices determined by the pandemic restrictions in force (the shoot took place in 2021) which prevented the use of the locations originally chosen by the production.
The production recreated places that are actually thousands of miles away in areas that were actually close to each other, e.g. the locations used in the region of Apulia, which were 250km (max) distant: Trani became France, its harbour a fish market; the sandy coast of Otranto was used for Norway; the lighthouse of Punta Palascia, on the Adriatic Coast at the height of Otranto, stood in for the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. Working with the local Sovrintendenza, the production even repaired the dirt track leading to the lighthouse (symbol of the easternmost point in Italy) in packed earth.
Vancouver was created in Veneto and the landscapes of Peru in Lazio. Specifically, the Veneto sets were in Rovigo and surroundings, (Pila Porto Tolle, Volano beach) and Rome, Ostia, Civitavecchia and the torre Flavia in Ladispoli in Lazio.
The underwater sequences were shot in a tank in Brussels. Visual effects created the land and water animals, natural catastrophes and the titular “swarm”.
