The National Archaeological Park of Scolacium is located in Roccelletta di Borgia (province of Catanzaro), in the middle of an ancient olive grove. The site records the history of ancient Skylletion, city of Magna Grecia, which later became a Roman colony with the name Scolacium. The city was abandoned towards the 7th-8th century C.E. because of flooding which made living conditions difficult for the population.
Ruins of the Roman city include traces of the forum, which has an excellent laterizio (brick) floor, and buildings like the Curia, Cesareum and Capitolium. A 3,500-seat theatre was set on a natural hill and the site has the only Roman amphitheatre in Calabria. The remains of paved roads, aqueducts, mausoleums, Norman basilicas and a thermal path complex can also be seen.
The museum, housed in a 19th century building that was part of the complex belonging to the Mazza family, conserves the artefacts found during excavation: a prestigious statue cycle, examples of Roman portraiture and a very unusual colossal forearm in bronze.
