The town of Volterra is located in the province of Pisa and was one of the main city-states in ancient Tuscany (Etruria), the home in Medieval times to an important bishop. Today it has an impressive town centre of Etruscan origins, with Roman ruins (including the hemicycle theatre) and Medieval buildings such as the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and Palazzo dei Priori located in the piazza of the same name.
