The Convent of St. Matthew the Apostle is located to the east of San Marco in Lamis (FG). Formerly known as the Convent of Saint John in Lamis, the imposing monastery stands at the foot of Mount Celano (871m above sea level), amidst green hornbeams and ash trees that tower over the Starale Valley.
The monastery has always been a destination for pilgrims, whose numbers have increased considerably in recent years with the flow of visitors to the tomb of St. Pius of Petrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo. This has increased the fame of the monastery which developed in the unique setting of the Gargano National Park. The famous library dedicated to Father Antonio Fania of Rignano Garganico, established in the last century in some chambers of the monastery (once used for keeping livestock) is home to over 60,000 volumes, and is one of the most important in the province of Foggia (Capitanata). The monastery also serves as a museum, given its notable collection of works of art (pictures, statues, simulacrums), ancient Bibles and numerous maps of the province.
