In 1777, King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon initiated the renovation work that were to turn the old 16th century palace and former seat of the University of Naples into the Real Bourbon Museum, one of the largest and most prestigious museum institutions in Europe, bringing together the precious collections of the royal museums of Capodimonte and Portici.
After a long period of renovation, today's Archaeological Museum transformation is evident when viewed alongside the ancient collections it houses and is one of the most important museums in Europe.
