The castle of Quart is located in Quart, perched on a rocky spur looming over the village of Vollein. The name Quartderives from the Latin ad quartum lapidem, and refers to the four miles that separate the village from the town of Augusta Praetoria (modern-day Aosta). The original building was built in 1185 by the founder of the lords of Quart, Jacques de la Porte de Saint Ours, and has undergone many modifications in the centuries.
Surrounded by a thick enclosing wall with round guard towers, the result of extension works that continued from the 12th to 17th centuries, the castle is a well-fortified residence with a collection of buildings that comprise the reception and service rooms, living areas, stables, barns and a chapel. In the inner courtyard, the stables are on the right and then the chapel which was decorated in plasterwork in 1606 by Giovanni Gabuti.
The trapezoid tower, which was the ancient keep, is the oldest part of the castle, dating to the 12th century, and inside has frescoes of Alexander the Great, the proud Macedonian conqueror, flanked by Samson and depictions of the months and professions.
