The castle of Verrès is one of the most famous medieval manors in Val d’Aosta, dominating the borgo of Verrès from a rocky promontory. Built as a military fortress by Ibleto di Challant in the 14th century, the castle is a single structure.
Filled with wide rooms, imposing stone fireplaces, Gothic windows and doors, the building has an inner courtyard where an imposing spiral stone staircase, supported by flying buttresses, leads to the second floor. The decoration of the interiors is very minimal, characterised by the use of green and white worked stone.
On the ground floor are two large halls, the kitchen and the armoury with two monumental fireplaces with shaped sills. The rooms on the first floor were for the use of the lords of the castle, lit by 14th century mullioned windows and featuring a large dining room and master kitchen with large fireplaces. The second floor was used by the servants and linked by a wooden staircase.
Since 1949, the castle has been the setting for the traditional carnival which re-enacts the deeds of Pierre d’Introd and Caterina di Challant.
