The Basento, 149km long, is the longest river in Basilicata, and the longest among the Italian rivers that flow into the Ionian Sea. Its water catchment area is 1,537km. Its source is located on Mount Arioso (1,722m) in the Northern Lucanian Apennines. It wet almost immediately the south of the city of Potenza, crossing the province of the same name to enter the province of Matera.
The main tributary of Basento is the Camastra torrent, which is blocked by a 54m high dam and with a capacity of about 32 million m³, whose waters are used by the city of Potenza. Its main stretch is in the industrial area of Val Basento between the municipalities of Pisticci, Ferrandina and Salandra while flows in the Ionian Sea close to Metaponto.
