Situated between the Alps and the Po Valley, the Lake Como extends into the provinces of Como and Lecco. Also known as Lario, from the Latin larius, the lake covers a surface area of 145km2 and is 410m deep.
Its Y shape embraces a variety of landscapes, from gently sloping hills to steep cliffs rising over the lake, and has inspired many famous Romantic writers including Alessandro Manzoni, Stendhal and George Gordon Byron.
The eastern shore of the lake, which offers glimpses of landscapes that evoke fjords, houses the nature reserve Oasis of Pian di Spagna and the picturesque hamlets of Corenno Plinio (part of the Dervio Municipality) and Varenna. In contrast, the western side is famous for its numerous historical buildings and their gardens, including the residences of many noted celebrities. Cernobbio has exceptional properties like Villa d’Este, Villa Erba and Villa Pizzo, while Laglio has seen its notoriety grow since the American actor George Clooney bought a house there.
