An unscrupulous banker is funding terrorist actions: the film’s opening scenes are set in Uganda – although the production did not go to Africa, preferring to shoot closer to home, in Buckinghamshire, South West England – and in Madagascar, shot in Nassau in the Bahamas.
While he is officially suspended, the unpracticed James Bond, only recently promoted to 007, foils an attack on Miami airport, although this was really shot in Prague. Here, in the Sala Filosofica of the Strahov Monastery, is the London library where M meets the agents. Once reinstated, the agent is given the task of winning a million dollar poker game: the tournament takes place in Montenegro, although again shot in the Czech Republic: the exteriors are in Karlovy Vary and Loket, while the interiors were built in London.
After the Casino chapter, we see James convalescing happily with Vesper, his Bond Girl, in Villa del Balbianello, in Lenno on Lake Como and later in Venice. The agent arrives by boat down the Grand Canal. A short stay in a hotel (whose interiors were shot in Prague) but danger lurks behind every corner. We see him racing across a Piazza San Marco thronged with tourist crowds in search of Vesper who is meeting someone and find him again in the courtyard of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory. This is followed by a gun fight of such violence that a palace crumbles.
The final scene is another homage to Italy: Gino Coppedè’s villa, La Gaeta, in Acquaseria by San Siro, once again on Lake Como, is the setting for the climactic struggle between Bond and Mr White.
