Capital of the region of Umbria, the city of Perugia centres around Piazza IV Novembre, which features the 13th century Fontana Maggiore di Fra Bevignate da Perugia, with bas reliefs by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, surrounded by the most important buildings of the city.
The Palazzo dei Priori, built between the 1200-1400s, is a Gothic building that houses the council offices and the National Gallery of Umbria which conserves masterpieces of Italian art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, by Piero della Francesca, Benozzo Gozzoli, Beato Angelico, Pinturicchio, and Perugino among others. The Sala dei Notari, the Collegio del Cambio, with a prestigious fresco cycle by Perugino, and the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, with its 16th century frescoes, are all notable.
At the Collegio della Mercanzia, a large ogive arch on Corso Vannucci leads directly to the rectangular Sala dell’Udienza, whose rib vaulted ceilings are covered with wood. Inside the Sala dell’Archivio is divided into two rooms, the first holds the three Matricole dell’Arte of 1329, 1356 and 1599, while the second has paintings by Domenico Bruschi, who was from Perugia, and traces of a 17th century fresco.
One side of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, built between 1345 and 1490, with the adjacent Museo del Capitolo, overlooks Piazza IV Novembre, the bronze statue of Pope Julius III and the pulpit of St. Bernardino of Siena, while the main facade stands in Piazza Danti.
