Since 1878, the National Gallery of Umbria, one of the country’s major art collections, has been housed in the upper floors of Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia, the city’s administrative centre since the Middle Ages and a significant example of Gothic civic architecture.
The collection is displayed chronologically, with 13th-15th centuries on the third floor and 16th-19th centuries on the second floor, and contains important pieces by artists such as Arnolfo di Cambio, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Duccio, Gentile da Fabriano, Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, Giovanni Boccati and Piero della Francesca, including the latter’s large altarpiece of St. Anthony with the famous Annunciation scene on the cornice.
Special attention is dedicated to the Umbrian artists Benedetto Bonfigli, Bartolomeo Caporali, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, Perugino, Pinturicchio and their pupils and followers. Themed sections focus on gold-working; inlaid ivory and wood work; traditional Perugia weaving; and the topography of the city. The exhibition route concludes with noteworthy paintings, from the 17th and 18th centuries, by Orazio Gentileschi, Valentin de Boulogne.
