The Church-temple of Santa Maria, located just outside the 13th century walls of the historical centre of Todi on Viale della Consolazione, is one of the highest examples of Renaissance art in Umbria.
Construction began in 1508 and continued for a century. The central plan, laid out on a Greek cross, reflects typically Renaissance ideas that saw this form as the expression of perfection, balance and unity of space. The building is made of a central square block around which four apses form the arms of the cross. Externally the church is decorated with a double row of Corinthian pilaster strips. The four apses are topped with half domes surrounding a square terrace that is the base for the large drum dome.
Positioned outside the perimeter walls, the church could be seen from afar, the prestigious nature of the building intimating the importance of the city.
