The 16th century Counts of Ceccano are responsible for the present-day appearance of the Baronial Castle of Maenza (LT). Built between the 12th and 13th centuries as a watch tower, it was later inhabited by the feudal overlords who successively ruled the area, each of which made improvements to the structure.
The most important changes were made under the Counts of Ceccano. In the 1200s, Bernardo I chose this for his residence which lead to the adaptation of what had been a simple watchtower into the present Baronial Palace. Two towers were added to reinforce the central quadrangular body with four storeys and a terrace and the walls were made thicker to better repel firearm attacks.
