Basso Monferrato is characterized by art, castles and landscapes for the most part intact. It can be explored by following paths that date to the Middle Ages when pilgrims would stop at the villages with the beautiful Romanesque pievi (rural churches) that were later left isolated on hilltops or in small country cemeteries.
Paths weaving through the landscape are a characteristic of the Terre dei Santi, whose heart is the birthplace of San Giovanni Bosco not far from the Romanesque complex of Santa Maria di Vezzolano, in Albugnano (AT), one of the most important examples of Gothic-Romanesque art in Piedmont. Other pievi include: San Giorgio (cemetery of Bagnasco di Montafia), San Secondo (Cortazzone, hamlet of Mongiglietto), San Nazario e Celso (Montechiaro d’Asti) and San Lorenzo (Montiglio Monferrato).
