Cremona, in the heart of the Po Valley, hosts a historical centre of extraordinary artistic, historical, cultural and architectural value.
During the Middle Ages and the time of the Lords, the power of Cremona grew and expanded as did its urban architecture. The artistic apex of the city is the Piazza del Comune which holds the main monuments, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, a large Romanesque temple which has embraced the addition of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements and conserves notable artworks. Close by, the Torrazzo at 112m is the tallest bell tower in Italy. It has seven bells and an astronomical clock that represents the sky with the constellations of the zodiac, crossed by the movements of the Sun and Moon.
The traditional meeting place of the town is the Loggia dei Militi, whose portico holds statues and shields that are the symbols of Cremona. The Palazzo del Comune and the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist, in marble and brick, complete the architectonic nucleus of the historical centre.
Along the town streets, numerous artisanal workshops continue the traditional production of torrone, the local sweets, and of string instruments, especially violins, the luthiers’ expertise classified as Intangible World Heritage by Unesco. The Violin Museum in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, conserves a collection of instruments made by some of the most famous violin makers, including Amati, Guarneri and Stradivari.
