The metropolitan city of Milan, administrative centre of the Lombardy region, is Italy’s principal economic and financial hub. It is also famous worldwide as a fashion centre, and recognised for its publishing, music (thanks to the Scala Theatre), industrial design and exhibition industries.
The unchallenged symbol of the city is the Duomo, with its late-Gothic architecture, façade in Candoglia marble and the panorama it offers from the summit. Classical and modern architecture abounds in the city centre which is the setting for the Royal Palace today an exhibition centre, the modern Museo del Novecento, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Sforzesco Castle, the 47-hectare grounds of Parco Sempione and the Pinacoteca di Brera which exhibits important works of art.
The picturesque neighbourhood of the Navigli, a well-known hotspot for nightlife, has navigable canals and small bridges.
The religious architecture of the city, however, is best represented by the Lombard Romanesque Basilica of St. Ambrose, followed by the Basilica of Our Lady of Grace, housing Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and the Basilica of St. Lawrence near porta Ticinese.
