Measuring 192,000 hectares across Basilicata and Calabria, the Parco Nazionale del Pollino is the largest national park in Italy. Crisscrossed by watercourses, including the Frido and Peschiera rivers in the area of San Severino Lucano, it features rocky outcrops, deep faults and ravines and unique vegetation that is notable for the great wealth of species that include the Pinus heldreichii, also known as Pinus leucodermis or pino loricato, a tree that is several centuries old which was chosen to be the park’s emblem.
The natural access point to the park is Terranova di Pollino (PZ), located on a terrace below Monte Calvario which looks up at the majestic peaks, protected by a hillside which supplied the stone which built its residences. Clean air, cold rivers and pristine nature make this place – also known for its Zampognara Art – a treasure chest of flavours and tradition where habits and local knowledge have been handed down for generations.
Le Murge, an area recently included in the UNESCO Global Geopark network, rise up in this stunning setting, home to great natural, geological, environmental and cultural marvels.
