Bagni Pian di Maia is a historic spa resort near Villabassa in Val Pusteria, today a holiday destination and popular place for relaxation for families and tour groups. It is located in the midst of pristine nature, hidden from the town.
The structure was built in the mid-18th century, when upper Val Pusteria was popular with the nobility. The mid-19th century was a golden age for spas thanks to ancient popular legends that believed the higher the altitude, the greater the water’s healing power and purity.
In 1952 Bagni Pian di Maia were taken over by the Scalabriniani Fathers who initially intended to use it as a summer residence for theology students. The most fascinating room in the building today is the dining room on the first floor, dated 1886 and signed by Jakob Noisternig. The entire room is painted, with cherubs playing music, vases of flowers, medallions with miniatures by Oswald von Wolkenstein, Josef Speckbacher, Joachim Haspinger, popular sayings and a view of Bagni Pian di Maia. The inner wooden courtyard with decorative elements is also interesting.
