Description

Bruneck City (835 m), located about 85 km from Bolzano (Bozen) and 40 km from the East Tyrol border, is the main town of South Tyrol’s Pusteria (Pustertal) Valley. The area of the city totals 45.1 km2 and it has about 15,600 inhabitants.

The city is situated in a broad valley basin with views of the Zillertal glacier to the north, the Dolomites to the east, Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) to the south, and the Falzes (Pfalzner) Plateau to the west.

Brunico was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1256 AD. Its name very likely derived from that of the founder of the city: Prince-Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg. The old town is accessible through four gates, whereas the city’s Gasse alleyways are delineated by the Torre delle Orsoline (Ursulinentor) tower in the west and the Ragen di Sopra (Oberragentor) tower in the east.

In the Ragen di Sopra district, you’ll find the town’s Romanesque Revival parish church nestled amidst medieval houses. Running along what was once the city’s moat, or Graben, you’ll now find a boulevard lined with chestnut trees and numerous cafes and shops. Brunico has managed to retain the character of its many little hidden alleyways, making the city quite enchanting.
