The South Tyrolean town of Brunico (835 meters a.s.l.), capital of Val Pusteria, is about 85km from Bolzano and 40km from the border with East Tyrol. The town covers 45.1 km2 and has approximately 15,600 inhabitants.
Brunico is located in a large basin that overlooks the Zillertal glacier to the north, the Dolomites to the east, Plan de Corones to the south and the Falzes plateau to the west. The first record of its existence dates to 1256 and its name probably derives from its founder, prince bishop Bruno von Kirchberg. The historic centre is accessible via four city gates, two of which, the porta delle Orsoline and porta di Ragen di Sopra mark (respectively) the west and east bounds of via Centrale. The neo-Romanesque style parish church is located in the Ragen di Sopra neighbourhood, surrounded by numerous medieval buildings. On the site of the ancient city ramparts there is now an avenue shaded by large chestnut trees and numerous bars and shops. Brunico surprises the visitor with its hidden alleys, whose original character has remained completely unchanged.
