Catania’s Teatro Massimo "Vincenzo Bellini" was inaugurated in 1890 and built by Carlo Sada. It is located on the square of the same name which is paved in pitted lava stone. Inspired by French eclecticism, the external façade of the theatre has a wealth of ornamentation and allegories and an elegant entrance with iron gates.
Used only for opera and music, the building has a large concert hall with four rows of boxes and a gallery. All the available space was used to create elegant corridors, a salon and foyer which houses a monument to Vincenzo Bellini. The theatre has 113 boxes, 8 proscenium boxes and a central box for the head of state, and can seat 2,000 theatre goers.
