The puppet theatre known as the Opera dei Pupi is inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Its general characteristics took shape in the mid 19th century when the puppeteers began to tell stories about the lives of saints and bandits and, in particular, the extremely popular stories about the Paladins of France. Famous puppeteer families include the Cuticchio family, whose members have contributed to the preservation of local oral tradition, ushering it through time to the modern day with the Sicilian Puppet Theatre, located in a little street in the historical centre of Palermo.
