Trabonella mine – Caltanissetta

Description

The mining activity of the Trabonella mine, in the Caltanissetta area, began around 1825 and was interrupted twice by firedamp explosions that caused the death of many workers. At 270 m, it is one of the deepest sulphur mines in Sicily. Sulphur was extracted here until 1950. Its definitive closure was caused by the crisis in the industry.
Significant expansion of the sulphur market in the late 19th century brought a notable increase in production at the Trabonella mine. This consequently increased the number of workers and the building took on the appearance of a fortress isolated in the valley. Some of the buildings from that time, such as the directors’, managerial and production offices, are still in excellent condition. The surrounding area features the old kilns for sulphur combustion, cranes, locomotors and various machines.
