The Raffo Mine, in the hamlet of Petralia Soprana (PA), is one of Europe’s richest salt deposits. Access to the deposit is 50m underground and it extends out with over 40km of subterranean tunnels. With a long history of use with small local and artisanal cultivations, salt has been extracted industrially here since 1972.
The circular lines and spirals left by the extraction process, which crumbles salt from the rock, embroider the walls of the mine making it a unique environment. This is why some of the disused tunnels in the site host MACSS – Museo Arte Contemporanea Sotto Sale (Museum of Salted Contemporary Art), the only contemporary art museum in the world situated in a working salt mine, with sculptures by artists from all over the world and several artefacts of industrial archaeology.
