Lucera, a treasure chest of art and culture, is spread over three hills from where it overlooks the vineyard filled plain of Tavoliere, 18km from Foggia. The thick boundary walls built by the Angevin Charles II of Naples once had 5 gates, of which only Porta Troia is left today. Here Pyrrhus and Hannibal fought against the Roman Empire. Inside the walls, the town gathers around the historical centre with elegant noble palaces and Renaissance churches such as Fortezza Sveva, the Sanctuary of St. Francis, the Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption and Palazzo Valletta, today Carnevale, with its severe portal and elegant interior. The Municipal Museum Fiorelli conserves a collection of Roman, Byzantine and Medieval coins.
