The Church of St. John in Vigo di Fassa (Trento) can be traced back to 1400 and is considered the mother church of the Val di Fassa. It was once the point of reference for the valley’s entire religious community.
The building is built in Alpine Gothic style and consists of a single body with a steep roof and a spire façade enriched by a rose window. The 67-metre-high bell tower has a Romanesque layout with three bell cells and an arrow spire. Beside the church is a cemetery and the entire complex is encircled by perimeter walls.
Church preserves an old crypt dedicated to St. Michael Archangel with references to Lombard religious customs. The interiors are also Gothic in style with three naves supported by cylindrical columns. The keystones are decorated with coloured emblems commemorating the families who financed the work on the church, while the hanging walnut crucifix is more recent.
The church preserves valuable artistic works such as frescoes, paintings, a marble baptistery and the large altarpiece at the main altar.
