The Catacombs of St. Januarius date to the 2nd century C.E. and were extended during the 4th century when the remains of Sant’Agrippino, first patron saint of Naples, were laid there. Thanks to the solidity of the tuff rock and its easy handling, the catacombs have very large spaces and are spread out over two, separate levels. The lower catacomb developed around the Basilica of Sant’Agrippino and has a 6m high ceiling and a wide baptismal font. The upper catacomb, which has its origins in an 3rd century sepulchre, was extended in the 5th century when the remains of St. Januarius were moved and it became a pilgrimage site: the Bishops Crypt was created for the burial plots of the city’s bishops and the basilica adjecta, an underground cathedral with three naves, was built after St. Januarius’s remains were moved.
