The Norman tower has been part of the structural complex comprising the village of Tricarico (MT) since the Middle Ages. Positioned on a rocky spur, the imposing structure has four storeys and reaches a height of 27m, with walls over 5m thick in some places.
The adjacent castle (built between the 9th and 10th centuries) became a convent for cloistered nuns in 1333 while, given its strategic position, the tower, previously the keep, maintained its military function until the 1600s. In 1931 the tower was inscribed as a national monument.
Although there are no walls, it is still possible to hear a cave-like echo when speaking from a positioned on the central stone of the covering of the top of the tower.
