The neighbourhood known as "Serpentone" (big snake) or rione Cocuzzo in Potenza grew up in the early 1970s and is characterised by a large building, approximately 40m wide and 500m long, whose imposing bulk dominates the urban landscape like a horizontal skyscraper.
The main thoroughfare of the neighbourhood, via Tirreno, was the focus of a large-scale requalification initiative (began in 2000, completed in 2010) designed by the Archea studio (initially entrusted to the Spanish architect Enric Miralles) which lead to the creation of a large hypogeum, with a public park on the roof, known by locals as the “ship”.
