The city of Potenza, also known as the vertical city or city of a hundred stairs is traversed by the longest escalator system in Europe which is divided into three distinct routes: viale Marconi, via Armellini, Santa Lucia. In total, the escalators extend over more than 1.3 km.
The first route (430m) to be inaugurated (in 1994) connects the lower part of the city to the historical centre, by joining viale Marconi to via del Popolo, with stops at viale Dante, via Vespucci and piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
The escaltor of via Armellini, inaugurated in 2008, links the multi-storey parking centre to via Due Torri. Its scale an overall height difference of approx. 50m with two sets of escalators and 2 vertical elevators.
The most recent route, Santa Lucia, dates to 2010 and links via Tammone with Porza Salza in a route 600m long which takes 15 minutes. The route has two escalators linked by a covered walkway that is 120m long.
The escalators are open all year round during the day.
