The Fortress of Priamar is an imposing military complex that rises on a hill of the same name by the sea, in the town of Savona.
Since its construction in 1542 - 1544, the structure has undergone numerous modifications. The fortress can be reached by the Bridge of St. George, which leads to the bastions: to the west, the Baluardo of St. Catherine and to the east, the Baluardo of St. Charles, with the Torrione del Cavallo looming behind. The 18th century Palazzo della Sibilla, which was originally used as storage for soldiers and is now restored and used as an exhibition space, overlooks the Piazza d'Armi della Cittadella, where a cathedral and other medieval structures stood until the 1500s.
The Maschio di Sant’Anna on the Piazza d’Armi leads to the Palazzo del Commissario on the right and the Palazzo degli Ufficiali on the left: in the middle stands the medieval loggia of the Castello Nuovo. Today the Fortress is an important cultural centre which houses the Civic Museum of Archaeology and the "Sandro Pertini e Renata Cuneo" Museum, a conference centre (in Palazzo della Sibilla); an open air theatre seating 600 (in Piazzale del Maschio) and locations for cultural events (in the Palazzo del Commissario, Palazzo degli Ufficiali and the Cellette).
