Surrounded by blue sea and brilliant green hills, the city of Savona stands on the Ligurian Riviera di Ponente, near the outlets of the streams Letimbro and Quiliano which flow through it.The well-preserved historical centre with its important architecture and alleyways (known as carrugi) is connected to the more recent area of the Darsena.
The tourist marina, second in Liguria only to the Port of Genoa and a modern cruise stop, welcomes a million visitors a year. Symbol of the town is the Torre Leon Pancaldo, a 14th century structure located between the harbour and the historical centre and known as the “Torretta”.
The oldest part of town is known as “Città dei Papi”, the City of the Popes, because of the artistic and cultural heritage left by the Renaissance Popes Sixtus IV and Julius II, both members of the Della Rovere family from Genoa. Other places of interest include the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, which houses the Sistine Chapel commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV, Palazzo Gavotti which hosts the ceramic artworks of the Pinacoteca Civica (Municipal Gallery) and the Fortezza del Priamar, overlooking the sea, an imposing military structure from the 1500s. The fort is now the cultural centre of the town, housing the Archaeological Museum and Pertini Museum and hosting events, conferences and shows.
