The Hanbury Botanical Gardens extend along the Ligurian coastline, in a privileged position on the Promontorio della Mortola in Ventimiglia, province of Immola.
The park, which covers 18 hectares, was created by the English traveller Thomas Hanbury, inspired by his passion and by his success in exporting tea from China. Having bought the villa from the Marquis Oregno, Hanbury built a botanical garden around it with the help of local and English workers, planting almost 6,000 botanical species of tropical and subtropical origin. The park has a typically English aspect with pathways, pergolas, pavilions, statues and fountains, which extend across the land sloping down to the sea.
At the heart of the garden is the elegant 17th century villa with three storeys and a tower. After Hanbury’s death, the park passed to his son Cecil until the Second World War, after which it was bought by the Italian State in 1960 and entrusted to the International Institute of Ligurian Studies. Today it is the headquarters of the Università degli Studi di Genova.
