The origin of the urban settlement of Larino (CB) dates to Etruscan times when it was known as Frentum. Following its conquest and destruction by the Roman Republic, the town was rebuilt and renamed Larinum. The important archaeological sites in the area date to the Roman period, including the Roman Amphitheatre, the thermal baths and the mosaics in the private villas.
The historic centre has many buildings of historical and artistic interest, most of which date to the 13th and 14th centuries, including the Cathedral of San Pardo, the Church of St. Francis, the Church of St. Stephen and the Ducal Palace. The Cathedral of San Pardo, which houses the spoils of the town’s patron saint, is characterised by a Romanesque Gothic stone facade with a large wooden portal and a thirteen-spoked rose window. The 11th century Ducal Palace, originally a Norman fortress, was later converted into a noble residence and a prison and today houses the Civic Museum.
