The village of Castel San Vincenzo is located on the western foothills of Monte Vallone. The area still preserves the traces of old vineyards and olive groves on the south-facing slopes which no longer benefit from the attention and care that the peasant population provided in previous times. The village’s two contrasting architectural spirits seem to be inspired by the contrast between the two slopes: one filled with light, the other with a harsher climate.
Overall, Castel San Vincenzo comprises a cluster of old residences with an ancient atmosphere, linked together by narrow alleys that can be very cold and silent in the winter. Outside the village, the Lake of Castel San Vincenzo, a manmade lake built towards the end of the 1950s for hydroelectric purposes, occupies an area of 6,140km², is harmoniously set into the neighbouring landscape of mountains and woods. Not far away is also the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, also home to an isolated monastery surrounded by woods.
