Surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Mainarde range, at 783m above sea level, in the municipality of Castel San Vincenzo (IS), this manmade lake has a surface area of 6.140 km² and a capacity of 10 million cubic metres of water.
The lake was created in the 1950s to feed the hydroelectric plants in the area: waters from Alfedena and Barrea, in the region of Abruzzo, are brought to the central plant of Pizzone, then enter the lake to pour eventually into the largest of the hydroelectric plants at Colli al Volturno.
Belying its manmade origins, the lake fits harmoniously into the territory and is much appreciated by tourists, nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts. Over the years it has become a destination for leisure activities: swimming, water sports, camping and horse-riding.
