The ducal castle of Corigliano Calabro (province of Cosenza) was built in 1073 as a military fortress and over the centuries has belonged to various owners who used it for different purposes. In 2002, after numerous transformations, it was opened to the public as the Ducal Castle Museum.
The prisons, 19th century cast-iron kitchens and ammunition store are located on the mezzanine. The piano nobile has the private apartments, still furnished and frescoed, and the dining room, with original ceramic decorations and a wrought iron chandelier. On the same floor is the salone degli specchi, whose large mirrors are framed with gilt plaster work and brocade, with Bohemian crystal chandeliers and a trompe-l'oeil painted ceiling.
The Chapel of St. Augustine was built around 1650 as a small private oratory in the west tower. The keep is both the symbol of the building and its oldest component. It is five storeys tall, each one frescoed by Girolamo Varni and linked by a cast-iron staircase built by Neapolitan artisans.
