The Ferramonti Internment Camp in Tarsia was the largest (in numerical terms) of the many such camps imprisoning Jews, refugees, foreign enemies and Slavs established by the Fascist regime from June to September 1940. The camp was liberated by the British in September 1943 but many of the internees remained there until its closure on 11 December 1945.
The camp originally occupied 16 hectares and comprised 92 huts of varying sizes, many in a U - shape, with communal kitchens, latrines and washrooms. Adjacent to the camp area (today a field), the Ferramonti di Tarsia Memorial Museum was inaugurated in 2004 to honour and conserve the history and memory of the concentration camp. This also houses the Gustav Brenner Library which includes printed and multimedia documents, an archive, multimedia room and conference room.
