Located in Fallistro (municipality of Spezzano, province of Cosenza) on the high plateau of the Sila range, the Riserva naturale guidata biogenetica “I giganti della Sila” is an example of the forest that previously covered most of the area, right up to the end of the 19th century when it began to be stripped for firewood.
The area comprises 5.4 hectares of pine forest at an altitude of about 1,400m and preserves over 60 examples of majestic Pinus nigra (black pine), “the giants of Fallistro”, up to 45m in height with 2m diameter trunks. Fifty-six of them are estimated to be about 350 years old. The mountain acers in the reserve were planted by the Barons of Mollo in the 1600s when they owned the hunting lodge which now belongs to FAI - Fondo per l’ambiente italiano.
