In the heart of Palermo’s historic centre, piazza Marina is located at the end of corso Vittorio Emanuele (ancient Cassaro) in the area of the city overlooking the sea.
A range of public spectacles were organized here in the past, including executions and torture managed by the tribunal of the Inquisition based out of the nearby Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri.
At the centre of the square is the 19th century villa Garibaldi, a public garden created by Gian Battista Basile in 1864-66, adorned with plaques and the busts of Renaissance figures and several Ficus trees that are centuries old.
The square is lined by imposing historical buildings and noble residences including, in addition to Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri, Palazzo degli Abatelli, the ancient Royal Mint, Palazzo Sant’Onofrio, Palazzo Notarbartolo di Villarosa, Palazzo Galletti di San Cataldo and Palazzo Gangi.
The setting is completed by the Garraffo fountain and the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli.
