Piazza Magione is one of the great squares in the historical centre of Palermo, situated in the heart of the Kalsa neighbourhood. It owes its name to the Basilica La Magione in the southern end of the neighbourhood, which was the result of the Renaissance division of the Magione garden, a large expanse which today makes the square one of the most popular places in city’s night life. Buildings there include the Collegio di Santa Maria della Sapienza, in the centre of the square, and the Teatro Garibaldi, built next to viale di Palazzo Ajutamicristo.
The conformation of the square was transformed by violent bombing in WWII which completely destroyed the buildings surrounding it. The place has many links to Giovanni Falcone who lived here with his family and commemorations of the Capaci massacre are celebrated here.
