Created by Gennaro Filippini in 1974, the del Guasto Gardens are an original example of modern intervention in one of the two historic guasti in the city of Bologna. The gardens occupy part of the footprint of the private garden annexed to Palazzo Bentivoglio, a noble residence destroyed in 1507. The Bentivoglio guasto was abandoned until the mid 1700s when a large portion of it was used in building the Teatro Comunale.
The public park covers a surface area of approx. 3,000m2, elevated above street level. A double flight of stairs leads from the small square in largo Risphigi to the garden. The hanging garden, enlivened by a water course, is characterised by the use of cement moulded into forms that evoke the continuous changing of nature. Vegetation includes maples, Judas trees, Mediterranean hackberries, hornbeams, yews and mulberries laid out to crown the slopes. In 2000 restoration work included the opening of a second entrance in via del Guasto.
